Actually, mas gusto ko palang gumawa na lang ng ganon kesa yung magsalita sa actual debate. Tae na. Nosebleed eh. Napapahiya lang ako.

Debating is a humbling experience therefore I shall debate to leave the life of being mayabang.

MOTION: This House believes that Starbucks is Evil

GOVERNMENT:

Thesis: The fact that Starbucks Coffee’ products threaten its consumers’ health, diminish its consumers’ money, and take the market of local coffee houses make Starbucks evil.

I.    Starbucks is evil because its products are threatening to man’s health.
A.    Coffee has a very addictive effect. People become dependent to it. Coffee’s effect of stimulating one’s mood weakens over time and is solved by increasing the intake of the substance. Coffee consumers then become slaves to coffee and develop a mentality that without coffee, they could not work.
B.    Starbucks’ products can make a person fat. Their products’ nutritional facts reveal how unhealthy these beverages are. Venti Iced Caffe Mocha has 400 calories which is greater than the 250 calories a person gets from eating a 6 Piece McNuggets from Mcdonalds and a Venti Strawberries and Crème Frappucino has 750 calories which is more than what a person gets from eating a Cheeseburger meal from Mcdonalds (700 Calories: 250 regular French Fries, 150 regular Coke, 300 Cheeseburger).
II.    Starbucks is evil because it is impractical to purchase.
A.    Their products are ridiculously overpriced compared to other coffee brand alternatives that almost sell their coffee less than half the price of Starbucks Coffee.
B.    A regular patron of the coffee establishment who spends 150 pesos everyday for a serving of coffee would have to spend 54000 pesos annually which could already send a couple of kids to public schools. Coffee is really not that much of a necessity and money spent in purchasing these products could be used for something more meaningful than satisfaction through consumption of this created need.
III.    Starbucks is evil because it deprives local Filipino coffee brands their market.
A.    Starbucks branches overshadow Filipino coffee stores like Bo’s Coffee, Batangas Brew, and Figaro that provide people with the same quality of coffee at the same or lower price.
B.    Starbucks tends to saturate an area in order to earn more and to attract more people to patronize their products more than local brands. This saturation of areas is evident along Katipunan where Starbucks has 3 branches acquiring what could’ve been Bo’s Coffee’s market and also in malls like Trinoma where Starbucks has 3 branches located at different floor levels.

OPPOSITION:

Thesis: Starbucks is not evil because it benefits its consumer in many ways physically, serves as another place one could accomplish tasks, and reaches out to the unprivileged through its many projects and campaigns.

I.    Starbucks is good since its coffee allow consumers to be productive.
A.    Coffee contains caffeine, which is a stimulant, that when carried into the bloodstream elevates one’s mood, attentiveness, and way of thinking. These effects allows a person to work flawlessly even under extreme conditions.
B.     Caffeine found in coffee increases the rate at which the body burns calories which is why coffee intake has been an important part of weight control programs. Caffeine’s ability to increase physical performance has also made it well known among well-trained athletes.

II.    Starbucks is not evil since it acts as another place where one does and finishes tasks.
A.    Store interior design plays a big role in providing customers an ambiance that is comparable to none. Starbucks is usually furnished with stuffed chairs and table where one could sit and enjoy reading a book or work on the table with a laptop.
B.    Stores provide accessibility to free electricity as some branches have power outlets that prove to be convenient for customers who bring notebooks or any form of gadgetry that needs charging sometimes. Stores are also Wi-Fi hotspots that provide internet access to any customer with Wi-Fi capable devices.
III.    Starbucks is not evil since it is involved in different campaigns in addressing present social issues.
A.    In the United States, Starbucks branches sell a bottled water product named Ethos Water. A percentage of the earnings from the Ethos Water sales are used to fund clean-water projects in under developed areas. This project had raised $4.2 million  which was used for humanitarian water programs in Africa, Asia and Latin America and had helped an estimated 370 000 people acquire access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.
B.    Starbucks together with UNICEF organized SparkHope, a program that allows each Starbucks branch in the Philippines to adopt a baranggay and provide sustainable early learning programs for children. Customers take part in this effort of Starbucks by filling up sticker pads, which when filled gives a customer a Starbucks planner. For every planner given out 50 pesos is donated to UNICEF. In November 2004, SparkHope project has raised close to 1.7 million pesos for UNICEF’s programs.
